Residences in Clinical Oncology

Since its inception in 1983, the Foundation for the Investigation and Prevention of Cancer (FUCA) has imposed, as one of its primary objectives, training excellence human resources in oncology both in the aspects of the task of care as in the area of research. Thus, among the fellows of the foundation include prominent researchers and numerous clinical oncologists then to acquire a solid background, have been located in different parts of the country and even in neighboring countries.
Since 1994, with the opening of Alexander Fleming Institute and its designation as an institution affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires establishing an agreement between FUCA and Alexander Fleming Institute through which both entities argue, through scholarships specialization, the training for medical oncologists in a first level institution as this institute.
This training is done through a 3-year Medical Residences program, with compulsary on duties and daily schedules from 8 to 17 hs.
This job makes it difficult to have other work outside the Residences. Hence the importance of awarded scholarships thanks to which residents can devote themselves exclusively to the work while invest time in their academic training.

This training is and has been valued through the performance of residents in rotations performed in our midst as well as overseas (Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, Florida, EEUU; October 12 Hospital, Madrid, Spain).

 


Goals

Acquire skill and practice in the management of hospitalized cancer patients for various reasons related to their illness:

– Surgical-clinics complications
– Experience in the management of various oncologic emergencies.
– Practice minor surgical procedures of normal realization in cancer patients: pleurocentesis, paracentesis, diagnostic punctures,etc..
– Management of undergoing high-dose chemotherapy patients with autologous hematopoietic support and allogeneic bone marrow transplant.
– Acquiring a basic knowledge of radiant treatment as well as the indications and complications that can become of it.
– Management of the outpatient who attends a consulting room.
– Management of the outpatient who attends chemotherapy.
– Participation in clinical research (prospective and retrospective studies).
– Experience in monitoring and interpreting imaging studies of usual application for the diagnosis and monitoring of treatment of patients.
– Skill in designing research protocols, as well as experience in the development of the same through participation in clinical research protocols.


Residents activities:

1º Year
– Assessment of daily hospital patients (Including evolution, complete medical history in case of an income, daily indications and epicrisis).
– Making minor surgical procedures as paracentesis or evacuatory thoracocentesis in outpatients.
– Preparation of pharmacology classes, special modules (molecular biology and statistics) and atheneum.
– Preparation of the summary of the presented case in each travel in the ward .
– Participation in the travel in the ward and atheneums.
– Participation in the committees of breast tumors, lymphomas and melanomas.

2º Year
– Day hospital: Evaluation of patients attending this service, development of the indications, addressing the calls of patients seeking communicate with the doctor and, if it is decided to hospitalize a patient, make the admission and physical examination of the hospitalized patient.
– Attention of emergency patients. Making minor surgical procedures as paracentesis or evacuatory thoracocentesis in outpatients.
– “Control” in Dr. Chacon consulting room on Wednesday and Thursday.
– Rotations of the following services: Bone Marrow Transplants unit, Images, surgery and radiotherapy.
– Preparation of pharmacology classes, special modules (molecular biology and statistics) and atheneum.
– Participation in the travel in the ward and atheneums.
– Take note in the Committees of tumors.
– Participation in the committees of breast tumors, lymphomas and melanomas.

3º Year
Consulting room with Dr. Chacon
– Rotations for Services: oncology in Udaondo Hospital; head and neck in Roffo Hospital; gynecologic oncology in Clinic Hospital.
– Preparation of pharmacology classes, special modules (molecular biology and statistics) and atheneum.
– Participation in the travel in the ward and atheneums.
